Spring Brings New Life, Discovery and Awe

I was out watering down my newly built pool today and looking around at all the budding trees. I was thinking about spring and how invigorating it is for most people. I live in south central Texas where we don’t have much winter, but I grew up in Ohio, so I know that feeling of ‘cabin fever’ after a long, cold winter! I am sure that has something to do with how alive and excited people feel in the spring, however I was thinking that it has something to do with the new buds on the trees, and flowers and emergence of garden plants. There is something about the newness that is enlivening. Which led me to wonder…since every minute of our lives is a minute we have never lived before….why do we stop being in awe and wonder of life.
I know that may seem like an odd question, but I think it is an important one. How many things and situations, and people in your life have you stopped discovering, including yourself?
Think about it, when you first started your job, or your career, or your company or your relationship, or your family, or moved into your home… how was it? Did you wake up excited, were you discovering new things, was it fun? When did that stop? Why?
I think, in one way, as people, we like to be comfortable and secure which may be one reason we take what was once new and a process of discovery and turn it into routine. However, what often happens is that after things become routine or stable, we complain about boredom or say things like “I am in a rut”, never realizing that we are the ones that put ourselves there. This is impactful in that we begin to dislike what we are doing or our relationships get stale (significant, friends and family relationships).
I invite you to start discovering your life, your business, your career, your job, your home, your relationships newly and see what happens. Start with one thing at a time- where you know you are bored or no longer excited. Discover and live in wonder again!
